I caught up with the band at Søpavillonen in Copenhagen on June 21st where I took the opportunity to interview director Maykel Blanco. I have uploaded the video of the interview mixed with clips from the concert. Although the interview is in Spanish, non-Spanish speakers will hopefully enjoy the concert clips. Mezcla On Tour in the United States
Mezcla is an historically-important group from Cuba that has opened musical doors both there and in the United States. As this is being typed (June 22), it is on the last day of a three-day run at Jazz Aspen Snowmass; they then play Oakland on June 26 and Chicago on June 29. Meanwhile, Mayimbe, after playing brilliantly to a massive crowd on June 1 in their US debut is coming back to the Bay Area's Club Cócomo on June 29. You can get $15 tickets with no service charge on Rueda con Ritmo's site. RcR's Ryan Mead and Sidney Weaverling are offering three classes on the afternoon of the Mayimbe show, including a study of Mayimbe's style called "Ritmos de Mayimbe". They always have brilliant insights on timba, rhythm and dance, several of which contributed greatly to the brand new Tirso Duarte edition of Beyond Salsa Piano, which should be out within 24 hours.
