Danny Lozada at Crash Mansion July 12,2007 Review & Photos!

Wow! What an amazing night! I never in my life imagined I'd accomplish something so special to me. With only 2 rehearsals very professionally looked after by Danny the banded sounded very tight and Danny, even though he was sick did an incredible job and gave his signature high-energy show. Over the next week I will post several reviews by different people in the NYC crowd. Here is an excerpt from a timba fan there from the Netherlands exactly as written to me in an e-mail today:

Hi Shabi,

I must say the concert was absolutely amazing! I'm a big Timba fan from the Netherlands and have seen a few good groups there (manolito, van van, delgado, azucar negra, etc.), but the energy, dynamic progressions and passionate performance of Lozada and his ensemble superseded anything I've witnessed so far.

Thanks,

Rens

Rens' youtube video compilation done with a normal camera can be found below. The sound is not accurate but you can feel the energy in the room. I will also be posting many videos in the coming week.

Debdoot Das-for video help and for just being an incredible friend and support system

Monica Erazo, Sophie Gilbert and Pamela Mazza-who helped me blanket NYC with flyers and so much more.

Melissa-who has done so much to help with press it's incredible

Kevin Moore-Timba.com-Danny owes just about everything he has to your incredible promotions and to you as such a huge fan.

Michael Lazarus-Timba.com-for getting the ball rolling as the first one who successfully produced a concert in San Francisco and inspired us all.

Alex and Andy Perez-The producers of Carlos Manuel's concerts in NJ- for amazing advice and support

Dj Walt, Rick, Alavaro and Añejo productions-for advice and keeping the timba scene alive in San Francisco!

Chris Rognicki-for promotional help

Willie Villegas-promoting to all of his students, lists

Dahlia-for being there all the way and helping with writing, promotions, videotaping, photography and more when she has no interest in timba.

Amada Castro-professional photography.. photos coming soon

DJ Medina-for playing so much good timba at Crash the night of the concert!

The Musicians- all of you were incredible, an inspiration and the work you did with only 2 rehearsals means to me that you could probably all have flourishing music careers in Cuba right now jajajaja! and the dancers did an incredible job too!

Luis Osorio-the biggest timbero I know, a huge Danny fan who went to his concert in San Francisco with me. He is in Iraq right now and we all waiting to see him back here so he can go to more concerts!

It really takes a team to have the kind of success that we had and there is no team in the world that was better than mine. Because of all of you above and all the fans in general next stop is SOB's with a full film crew and major press! Preparense para 28 de Septiembre!

It's just that so many Cuban-music lovers live in NYC, especially TIMBA fans, that I thought it'd be kinda cool to get together once a month. The party is named PICANTE, and starts at 9:00pm. Dance, drink, eat, enjoy in a lounge ambiance.

Sur Restaurant is located at 225 Smith Street, between Butler and Douglass Streets, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, a short walk from the F & G train (Bergen St). You can use this handy website http://www.hopstop.com/ to get transit directions.

“The brick-walled, candle-lighted dining room, with its beamed ceiling and rustic wood plank floor, is warm and inviting, without any of the usual gaucho cliches.” New York Times

March 10, 2005: New timba band in NYC

Well after Alexis Llerena left for
Miami, Alexis Y Su Sabor Habanero was no more! But with hard work and dedication from musicians inspired to keep timba going. They have formed "La Bolá." Here is a brief bio on them:

La Bolá

La Bolá is the newest timba band on the NYC-music scene. Drawing from some of the leading Cuban musicians in the tri-state area, this group emerged out of deep desire to establish a real timba-band in the NYC-area, one which reflected the real sounds of "la calle Cubana" . Their approach is to provide an eclectic blend of Cuban music, ranging across the wide spectrum of style and genres, yet in a refreshingly modern timba style. This band is poised to develop into a real musical force, as with much vigor and train-like energy (13 musicians, including strings, full percussion and 3 trombones), their music shines, particularly with the quality of their arrangements and the slick style of their execution, without ever losing sight of the fact that timba is all about dancing.

The band's musical direction is headed by the brilliant pianist/arranger/composer, Ariacne Trujillo, while a distinct duo of vocalists, el Niño and Juan Got, provide a magnificent marriage of different styles and approaches. A powerhouse rhythm section that is remindful of the Cuban-based timba bands, and draws from some of the top players in the business, is complemented by a full-force trombone section and the harmonious, yet soulful, elegance of the Cuban flute and violin.

March 9, 2005: End of timba at the Copacabana...

WOW, 24 hours into NYC editor and I get this sad news to report! March 24 will be the last night of HAVANA NIGHTS @ THE COPA. DJ Gary posted on the Timbacubana Yahoo Group that the Copa manager wants to change "THE HAVANA NIGHTS" for the other Latin thing! If we all listen to the Latino Mix or La Mega you have an idea of what DJ Gary is talking about, for those who don't well Reggeton, Merengue, Bachata, and Salsa. Its all about what's running the airwaves now a days. If Timba was running the airwaves would this have happened? Maybe, Maybe not. But, as of right now unfortunately it's not! And what is I don't know how people can sit there and listen to it with the exception of Salsa. Salsa comes from Cuba they may not play it with the same style but it has roots! What holds ahead for Timberos of the NYC Area? Who knows? You have some options, nights when Carlos Boys band have gigs or Rico Tumbao. I would like to organize something myself, but I need sponsors. And that's the hard part, I didn't get any takers when I planned the Carlos Manuel Show back in December. All I can say is Timberos hold your heads up high you did something that hasn't ever been done, have timba played in the famous club of New York. DJ Gary Thanks for all the hard work! You have showed people that it's possible to have "Havana Nights"

Also for those who admire Cuban music from the
US:

Albita Rodriquez y Hansel y Su Orquesta Calle Ocho will be at Club Ole on
North Broad Street in Elizabeth, NJ. This Saturday from 8pm-3am ticket prices are from $40-$60. All who are interested tickets will be sold at the door as well.

February 25, 2005: NY Section is back after a long vacation!

Welcome back to the NY Section after a long vacation. My name is Andy Perez. I am the new editor of this section. Linda Rodriguez handed over her duties to me after being piled with homework and papers from Harvard University. Here's a little bit of myself. I was the organizer of the Carlos Manuel performance back in December. We are trying to work on something for the near future as well. I am very close friends with Abdel "Lele" Rasalps - Van Van Singer. I am mainly a fan of Los Van Van but accept all forms of Timba. For any events going on in NYC or NJ that you would like to get posted feel free to email me APEREZ1026@AOL.COM.

Finally pictures of the Carlos Manuel
12/11/04 performance at Club España in Newark are up. Also lots of new things to report! Alexis y Su Sabor Habanero are no longer together. Alexis has since moved to Miami. Rumor has it Congero Aryam Vazquez is putting together a timba band with the original members and some newer faces. Every Friday Friends of Danny Rojo presents timba en talla with live music from 10 pm and Dj at 12am only timba. Every Friday they will present the best musicians in NY Danny Rojo,Carlos Del Pino, Lisandro Arias, Igor Arias, David Oquendo, Horacio "el negro" Hernandez, Pupi Insua, Felix Fiesta, Desmar Guevara, Dr Vicente, Oriente Lopez, Alex Garcia, Rey De Jesus and much more. IN VIVO VERITAS 1202 St. Nicholas Ave corner of 170 St. Manhattan. 212-781-4900. Also some Fridays at The Havana Bay Coffee in Union City - Havana Nights DJ Gary Dominguez and Franroy y Los CarlosBoyz Band. Check back for more details on that. Any info on events feel free to email me APEREZ1026@AOL.COM.

December 28, 2004: The NYC section of timba.com is on hiatus until the beginning of February when the lovely and talented Andy Perez (organizer of the Carlos Manuel concert) will be taking over editor duties. Send all timba information to him at aperez1026@aol.com. Happy dancing and timba listening in 2005.
