¿Consorte...que
volá con la Rumba?
For
many Cubans who have left their motherland, the words Cuba and
Nostalgia go hand in hand. And in no other manifestation of the
Cuban culture is nostalgia more prevalent than in its music. Fortunately
for those Cubans living in Miami, the music of their past has
never been too hard to find. If your passport to memories of better
times is in the form of Benny Moré or Barbarito Diez, you've
got a million places to hear their songs come back to life. Great
places like Hoy Como Ayer or Café Nostalgia. If your love
affair was with a lively jam by Los Van Van or Adalberto Alvarez,
you can always dance the night away at Lario's on South Beach.
But! If you're jonesing for a little Muñequitos de Matanzas
or Los Papines, you're pretty much out of luck. There is really
nowhere in Miami to go to where you can hear and see live Rumba.
I'm not talking about that sterilized Ballroom crap. I'm talking
real low down, nitty gritty Guaguanco. There is nowhere to hear
it, to see it, to feel it! Nowhere
until now.
I
am happy to announce that Rumba is not dead en La Yuma! It is
alive and well in Little Havana, USA. However, this is not by
accident. It is thanks to two very special individuals, Adalberto
Delgado and his lovely wife Olga. Not to mention a myriad of others
from the Little Havana community who contribute to this worthy
cause in one way or another. People like Miguel Cruz, a legend
in the world of Afro-Cuban music, who plays there every Friday
night for the weekly "Rumba en la 6" jam session. People
like RockinCha, one of the most interesting cats you'll ever meet,
and a legend in his own rite. And that's only the icing on the
cake. The jam sessions that are born every Friday night in Adalberto's
small alternative space feature an all-star lineup of some of
the most talented percussionists to ever touch a drum. I mean,
if you don't get up and dance there, you ain't got no soul baby!
You
really need to see what happens in this magical place every Friday
night. It is 100% guaranteed to move you. It is such a beautiful
sight to see; this small little gallery, packed with people of
all ages, races and cultures moving to one vibe. All feeling the
irresistible call of the clave
Ta Ta TaTaTa!
If
you are ever down in Miami, or if you live here now
