Concert Report - 2006 West Coast Tour - Reinier Guerra

Reinier Guerra appears to be a quiet, unassuming young man, but when he picks up the drumsticks he becomes possessed by the gods. It's not just the drummers who wind up with their jaws on the floor by the end of the first song -- you don't have to know anything at all about music to understand what's so special about Reinier -- the musical electricity sparks off of every part of his drumkit -- it's simply overpowering.

I was in timbageek heaven when I managed to install myself into Rocapulco's crow's nest band room and look down from above onto the stage. Cruz & Guerra were like a single 4 armed beast being controlled by some supremely funky higher force, completely in sync as they surged from gear to gear and bloque to bloque.

Tomás Cruz & Reinier Guerra

Reinier Guerra and Tomás Cruz are a rhythm section without peer -- elevated to peak performance, along with everyone else in the room, by the magnetic presence of three powerful icons of the Timba pantheon: Manolín, Yordamis and Chaka. It's impossible to look at any of them without experiencing intense memories of the torrid Havana scene of the late 90's.
