Orquesta Pomo Medley
Gröna Lund
Orquesta Pomo medley from Gröna Lund
Stockholm Salsa Summer 2012 officially came to an end with a concert by Orquesta Pomo on September 22nd at the last salsa night at Stockholm's amusment park Gröna Lund. Despite the chilly, rainy weather the dancers showed up and the dancefloor was packed. The 13-man band continues to impress with Celia Ferrer and Cristian Guerra on lead vocals and Cristina Pomo and Alexander Saltell on coros. They are tight, well rehearsed and have tailored the show to dancers. Bandleader and pianist Jonas Pomo has written most of the songs, although they do include a couple of covers that are real crowd pleasers.
Orquesta Pomo has put together a 4 minute montage from the concert, and we share it with you for your viewing and listening pleasure. And just when you think it's over, don't close your browser yet because there is a little recording of just the horns from the soundcheck and it is smokin'! You don't want to miss it! For pictures from the concert as well as the latest info on what is happening with the band check out the Orquesta Pomo Facebook page.

As of this posting, some of the classes have already been filled, and some extra sessions have been added.
For those of you who are quite young, Changuito is, quite simply, one of the most important figures in modern Cuban percussion - here's Michelle's short profile.
Reminder: Arturo Sandoval's US Tour begins Friday, October 5 at 8PM at the Viper Alley
in Lincolnshire, Illinois. This comes on the heels of his 5 recent Latin GRAMMY nominations, four of which are for Dear Diz (Every Day I Think Of You) and one for Tango Como Yo Te Siento. Rebeca Mauleón's Series Begins with Orestes Vilató Wednesday Night
Wednesday, Oct. 3, 7:00 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco
Rebeca Mauleón has a genius for - among other things - translating Cuban music concepts into simple, entertaining English, so the Bay Area is fired up about her new lecture series on Cuban Music. The first lecture, on mambo, features guest artists Orestes Vilató, Jesús Díaz and others. Later courses will feature Jimmy Branly, El Negro Hernández and a whole cast of other big names. Hopefully the whole 5-lecture series will be filmed and released as a DVD. There will be a new lecture with different guests every Wednesday in October. See you there! [Kevin Moore]

Peter's Center for Latin Studies Conference Report and Two New Pedrito Galleries
Peter Maiden files this photo-report on the recent Center for Latin Studies conference with Bill Martínez, Raúl Fernández and others.
BOOK NEWS: Peter has also written an excellent book, Media Workers for Social Change, available in softcover, Kindle, iPad and Nook.
MORE BOOK NEWS: Robert Fernández is working on an instructional book on playing three batás with one player, and, along with Luca Brandoli, on the first transcription of the arará version of the Oru seco.
MORE BOOKS NEWS: My tome for dancers and non-musicians keeps growing. Should be done in less than a month. (And yes, that's what I said last month and the month before that.)
Now, on to the latest galleries, both on the Pedrito Martínez Group. Peter Maiden photographed them at Yoshi's, and Tom Ehrlich at the Monterey Jazz . Tom's earlier Yoshi's gallery is here. [Kevin Moore]
