Amazing Cuban Podcasts

Changüí!

We've all been waiting for this episode of The Clave Chronicles.

The genre of Changüí is one of the great "missing links" of rhythm: like guaguancó, chachalokefún, guarapachangueo, the Oru Seco, James Brown c. 1970, J. Dilla c. 2000, Count Basie c. 1940, Arsenio from 1940 to 1952. And this week's Clave Chronicles guest, Ben Lapidus, is definitely the missing link in terms of studying this mysterious and fabulously funky genre. He's the world's leading English language source of information on the subject -- from his seminal book ...

... to his work on last year's 4-CD boxset, The Sound of Guantánamo.

Tirso's Musical Legacy

I was honored to help out with a special episode of The Clave Chronicles devoted to Tirso's contributions to La Charanga Habanera, Pachito Alonso, Los Que Son Son and timba in general. Among other things we focused on the art of musical quotation. The great timba arrangers use ideas from the entire history recorded music in the same way that hip-hop producers incorporate actual audio samples. In our exploration of El bla bla bla from Charanga Habanera, and Iala from Tirso's solo career, we found "samples" from samba and bossa nova, to Pablo Milanés' nueva trova, to Makuta folkloric music, santería songs, Walt Disney movie themes, and even Frederic Chopín. Tirso is no longer with us but his music lives on, even as Chopin's music lives on through Tirso's work. [Kevin Moore]
