Cuba based rap duo, Zona Franka, blends traditional rhythms with the grit and swagger of hip-hop and rap vocal phrasings. Their clever shout choruses create instant tropical dance classics using their unique self-titled "changui con flow" style.

Tiki Tiki - Video debut from TIMBEROS DEL NORTE

First album from TDN direct from Austin, Texas

Oh yeah! Timba from Texas... Austin, Texas to be exact. The first and self-titled album by TIMBEROS DEL NORTE was named one of the Top 10 Austin Releases (see below).  Grammy-winning trombonist / arranger Raul “Ralo” Vallejo and pianist / producer Paul “Pauly” Matthews spearhead this 10-piece outfit featuring multi-layered vocals and horns in an impressive and enticing 12-song collection of heavily rhythmic Cuban jazz and pop.

"Timberos Del Norte, self-titled. Deep danceable grooves driven by ebullient horns and vocals mark this collection of Cuban music that sounds like it could have come straight out of Havana but was made right here." -- Peter Blackstock, Austin American Statesman newspaper

The future growth of Timba in the US will probably not be in Miami, NY, Chicago (although a promising new band is coming together there if it stays together), LA, SF - it will be in Louisville and Austin and Boulder and Boston and some other cities like it. Why? A couple of reasons:
1. The first batch of cities is already saturated with excellent musicians and bands - el mercado no aguanta más,
2. Cuban musicians are catching on to (1) and congregating in new cities.
I'm actually more upbeat about the genre's chances that I was a couple of years ago - the new audiences in these new markets are frequently friendlier to the bands and the music than the "established" audiences in the larger cities. It will frequently necessary to play a mix of styles during the night to thrive in these places, but hey, this IS the US - back in the 1900s, even Polka bands had to mix it up with Country and Western and Dixieland if they wanted to do any better than hang out in the same restaurant every week.
