SIMPOSIO INTERNACIONAL CUBADISCO 2017

ENGLISH: From my point of view, the International Symposium held by CIDMUC (the Center for the Research and Development of Cuban Music) which takes place in Havana May 16-18 this year, is one of the most interesting things about Cubadisco - lectures, debates, demonstrations of instruments etc. However, it is also held entirely in Spanish, and it is often at a high technical level, so if you are not hispanohablante, check out the multiple other wonderful things on this website. My observation (I have attended before) is that those who attend the symposium without knowing the language find themselves lost very quickly. However, if you do undertand Spanish, more details are available in the Spanish version of the post below.

CUBADISCO 2017 IS ANNOUNCED / CUBADISCO 2017 SE ANUNCIA

ENGLISH: The 2017 Cubadisco Awards will take place May 2017 (approx May 13-21 with some events outside this time period). This year's theme will be Nueva Trova. We will have many more details in the weeks to come. You can read a translation of the convocation here.

ENGLISH: Septeto Santiaguero is about to release a new recording, Raíz . You can read our review here.
There will also be an opportunity to hear a couple of songs from the new album on Bill Tilford's radio program From the Isle of Music the week of January 30.

ENGLISH: January 26 marks the first anniversary of the passing of Miguel Angel Rasalps "Lele" , who sang with Elio Reve , was a founding vocalist with Los Van Van , and made many wonderful recordings with Los Reyes 73 in the 1970s. On January 23, 27 and 28, the radio program From the Isle of Music will air a radio tribute with special guest Ricardo Delgado , saxophonist with Los Reyes 73 during the 1970s, with a heavy emphasis on the music of Los Reyes 73 .
ESPAÑOL : El 26 de enero es el primer aniversario del fallecimiento de Miguel Ángel Rasalps "Lele", quien cantó con Elio Reve , era vocalista fundador de Los Van Van y hizó muchas grabaciones maravillosas con Los Reyes 73 en los años 70. Los días 23, 27 y 28 de enero, el programa radial From Isle of Music emitirá un tributo radiofónica con el invitado especial Ricardo Delgado , saxofonista de Los Reyes 73 durante los años 70, con un fuerte énfasis en la música de Los Reyes 73.

ENGLISH: On December 22, 2016, we lost a giant of Cuban Jazz and Timba, saxophonist/flautist Carlos Averhoff. Born in Matanzas on December 6, 1947, and classically trained, he became part of Irakere and also performed with NG La Banda , Issac Delgado 's group and Emiliano Salvador among others. He spent his final years in Miami, where he was a Professor of Music at the Florida International University School of Music and Professor of Saxophone at Miami-Dade College. HIs legacy will live on not only in his recorded music but also in the music of his many students. Carlos Averhoff Jr. , his son, has also emerged as a saxophonist of distinction.
ESPAÑOL: El 22 de diciembre de 2016, perdimos a un gigante de Jazz cubano y Timba, el saxofonista / flautista Carlos Averhoff. Nacido en Matanzas el 6 de diciembre de 1947 y formado clásicamente, se unió con Irakere y también se presentó con NG La Banda , el grupo de Issac Delgado y Emiliano Salvador entre otros. Pasó sus últimos años en Miami, donde era Profesor de Música en la Escuela de Música de la Florida International University y Profesor de Saxofón en el Miami-Dade College. Su legado vivirá no sólo en su música grabada, sino también en la música de sus muchos estudiantes. Carlos Averhoff Jr. , su hijo, también ha emergido como un saxofonista de distinción.
