(Orlando Valle) Maraca USA Tour 2011 begins June 14

13 piece band playing a mix of dance songs and afro-cuban jazz

Maraca 2011 USA Tour(Orando Valle) Maraca's USA Tour officially begins June, 14, 2011 at the Napa Valley Opera House (8pm) in Napa, California.

Straight from Cuba, Maraca's ensemble has been called “the most influential Afro-Cuban band of the emerging century” (Chicago Tribune) and “one of the hottest names in jazz” (LA Times). Maraca will have the Opera House moving to the authentic rhythms of salsa, mambo and cha cha cha, as well as creative Afro-Cuban jazz.

The band has been extended to 13 musicians, all coming from Cuba, with great addition as Jose-Miguel melendez (ex-Irakere), on vocals and solo percussion, and Alfred Thompson (ex-Irakere, Omara Portuondo and Ibrahim Ferrer) on tenor saxophone. The band will be playing a mix of their afro cuban jazz repertoire, danceable songs from their hits and songs from their new danceable CD which is being recorded in Havana now.

El grupo nace oficialmente como orquesta un 29 de Mayo del año 2010, previo a este lanzamiento oficial fueron aproximadamente 4 meses de constante ensayo hasta que Barbarito logro plasmar en la banda el sonido que él quería para la misma. Rápidamente el ensamble y el sonido del Mayimbe cautivaron al público, colocando así los temas de la orquesta en el hit parade nacional y calando fuertemente en la preferencia de los timberos peruanos. Cabe señalar que el común denominador de las orquestas del medio era hacer covers de las más importantes orquestas de música popular cubana del momento, otorgándole esto un merito especial al éxito de la orquesta Mayimbe.

Tremendos Estrenos - New tracks on Radio Timba

Radio Timba - Mayo 25, 2011Today's Radio Timba playlist includes tracks we've received from Havana and Lima. Maykel Blanco sends us his new live track "Un Kilo" with Michelito on vocals. "Un Kilo" was recorded live at Casa De la Música Mirmar in Havana.

Hot from Lima are Elio Reve's "Jala Jala", which features the sons of Pachito Alonso, Cristian and Rey, on vocals, and the father and son duo of Pedrito Calvo Jr. and Perdro Calvo (ex-Van Van).  

"Timba Manía" is a track produced and recorded by Bárbaro Fines and his Mayimbe band for a televisión show. Mayimbe has really taken over the city by storm.

Tour season is upon us and we are starting to update the tour section for more and more groups, so keep a close eye on the tours section and send an e-mail if you know about any concerts we are missing. Currently Havana D'Primera are in Quebec where they will give two presentations,  Tiempo Libre is on tour in the US in support of their new release "My Secret Radio", and the defenders of son, Sierra Maestra are touring Europe. They will be stopping here in my hometown of Stockholm on May 7th. There is nothing as tasty as a good son, so check their full tour schedule to find a concert near you!
