Cuba based rap duo, Zona Franka, blends traditional rhythms with the grit and swagger of hip-hop and rap vocal phrasings. Their clever shout choruses create instant tropical dance classics using their unique self-titled "changui con flow" style.

ROBERTO FONSECA

KUUMBWA JAZZ CENTER, SANTA CRUZ, CA

OCTOBER 23, 2014

PHOTOS BY TOM EHRLICH © 2014

Roberto Fonseca has an international following.   His style of music has been described as a fusion of jazz, Afro-Cuban music, hip hop and urban music.  I liken his style to that of Omar Sosa with his use of electronics, sampling and vocals combined with his outstanding keyboard playing and a strong supporting cast.  I am familiar with 7 of his 8 recordings as a leader and I highly recommend all of them.

I was lucky to be able to see, hear and photograph him at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, California.  The group gave an inspired memorable performance. What follows are some of my photographs.
